John 1:29
“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
Look at What God Has Provided
John the Baptist had a crowd, a growing following, and a reputation. Then Jesus walked up, and John did the most surprising thing a popular preacher could do. He pointed away from himself and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!"
The words would have hit his Jewish listeners hard. They knew lambs, every year a lamb was given for Passover, and lambs were offered on the altar for sin. Those sacrifices were a reminder that sin costs something, but no lamb on any altar ever finished the job. Here John says God has now provided His own Lamb, and He has come walking up the road.
Notice what John says the Lamb does: He "takes away" sin. He does not just cover it up or manage it, He carries it off, and it is not only for one nation, it is for the whole world. That means the person who has lived a decent life and the person who is ashamed to pray both need Him, and both are welcome to Him. John later shows us how Jesus does this, on a cross, at the Passover, as the Lamb who gives His life in our place.
Maybe you have a sin you keep carrying around. Something from years ago, or something from last week, and you replay it at night. You keep trying to make up for it with extra effort and promises to do better. John does not tell you to carry it harder, he tells you where to look. Look at Jesus, who came for exactly this. That looking is where joy starts to grow again because when you stop hauling your guilt, you have room to enjoy the God who already dealt with it.
Here is one step for today: name the sin you keep carrying, and tell Jesus you are done carrying it because He is the Lamb who takes it away.
Lord Jesus, thank You for being the Lamb who died for my sin. I turn from it and trust You to carry it away. Help me look to You today instead of to my guilt. Amen.
Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day.— Henri Nouwen
