Verse of the Day

John 2:11

“Jesus performed this, the first of His signs, at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.”

Joy at a Wedding Feast

The first sign Jesus ever did was not healing a leper or calming a storm, He kept a wedding party going. Today, that same choice, wine, is something Christians argue about, and some feel it makes them holier to build fences God never built.

Jesus, His mother, and His disciples are guests at a wedding in Cana of Galilee. The wine runs out, which in that culture would have been a deep embarrassment for the host family. Jesus tells the servants to fill six stone jars with water, and what comes out is not just wine but the best wine, much better than what was served before. John calls this “the first of His signs”. A sign that points beyond itself. This one shows who Jesus is, and John says it “revealed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him”.

Notice what the glory looks like. It is not a lightning bolt, it is generosity at a table, joy for ordinary people. Scripture is clear that drunkenness is sin, and a believer may choose to abstain out of wisdom, conscience, or love for a struggling brother, but Jesus never taught that happiness itself is suspect, and He never added rules to the Father’s Word to make people look more righteous. The Pharisees did that, and He rebuked them for it. Our standing before God comes from Christ, not from how strict we appear to be.

Maybe you have felt either pressure: to prove your holiness by a list of rules you must follow, or to dismiss the Lord’s boundaries altogether. Come back to Jesus. He gives good gifts, and He wants you to receive them with thanks, under His lordship, and to trust Him when the wine runs out in your own life, whether that is money, energy, or hope.

Here is one step for today: thank God out loud for one simple joy, then ask Him to show you where you are being asked to carry rules He never gave.

Lord Jesus, thank You for showing Your glory in joy and grace. Help me trust You when I run short, and keep me from adding burdens You never gave. Amen.
